Yukon OK Professional Photographer | What Photography has taught me

November 15, 2017

As a professional photographer in Yukon, Oklahoma, I have had an opportunity to take pictures of many different athletes, Seniors, families, and brides. The majority of these shoots have been in the Yukon, Mustang, Oklahoma City area.  But, a few of the events I covered have allowed me to shoot with people literally all over the world.  In my eyes, photography is about capturing memories for the people I work with. But, what you may not immediately recognize are the memories I collect.  Every photoshoot has given me a special set of memories that has help stengthen (and occasionally change) the way I look at life.   With Thanksgiving just around the corner, I have spent a lot of time reflecting on those memories and thinking about the things I have learned.  So, I'd like to share two of the  stories about my photography experiences that have had the biggest impact on me and helped shape who I am as a professional photographer.

Never Judge A Person On Their Appearance

Professional Photography OKC Mustang YukonI grew up in a very small farm community and had a very narrow view of society.  When I first started making the switch from being strictly a sports photographer to also shooting Seniors, Models and Weddings, I was a little shocked by how many people had tattoos. Tattoos were just not a thing in my normal circles.  One lady in particular was looking for a photographer and reached out to me.  I was happy to work with her, but was a little anxious about it.  She had several tattoos, gauges in her ears and a nose piercing.  I just didn't know what kind of 'weirdo' this was going to be.  When I got to know her, I realized she is one of the best people in the world.  We talked a lot about her tattoos and I began to learn the meaning behind them.  Over the years, we have shot together on multiple occasions.  I have developed a huge amount of respect for her.  I am thankful I didn't let my preconceived (and inaccurate) views get in the way.  Photography has helped me to open my mind and look at what is truly important in a person.

Pictures are powerful and photoshoots help heal

OKC Yukon Mustang Professional PhotographyI worked with a lady and didn't realize the impact her shoot would have on both of us (remember my narrow view of society??).  We had talked off and on about shooting together but could never get it to work out.  Eventually, we got our schedules to work and had a date for the shoot.  She wanted to do something a little bit sexy but not too wild and she recommended shooting at her families farm.  What I learned when I got to the shoot had as big of an impact on me as it did her.   She told me that she had just gotten out of a very controlling (maybe abusive) relationship where she had no choices.  Our photoshoot was one of the first steps in her regaining her confidence and self worth.  At one point she threw up her hands and yelled "I feel so free".  Fortunately, I had my camera ready and captured that moment.  It was at that moment that I realized that being a photographer was much more meaningful than just snapping a picture.  Photography is a powerful tool that helps people see themselves in ways they may not have before.  To this day, this is one of my favorite images, not because of what you see but because of the feeling and emotion that it created.  I enjoy creating awesome pics, but I LOVE helping people feel amazing about themselves.

Professional Family Photographer Yukon OKC MustangI will be spending my Thanksgiving with some very important family members.  I am sure that many of the discussions will be about the models, Seniors, families and brides I have worked with this year.  It will be undeniable that each and every one has given me a memory of my own that I will treasure forever.  For that, I am truly thankful.

Have a great Thanksgiving!  Send me a message if you're interested in your own professional photoshoot.
