Senior Photoshoot - Part 2, Makeup makes a good foundation

March 20, 2017

Photo Ready Makeup

When it comes to makeup there's several different trends and looks that are appropriate for different purposes. It's important to note that camera-ready, stage, everyday and red carpet all have varying techniques. Here's a few tips on how to make your look fantastic for the camera!

  • Moisturize - It's important to have hydrated skin to give your makeup a smooth surface to apply to.
  • Prep Skin - Along with keeping your skin hydrated, you want to give your base a foundation for success. Using a primer will help smooth out imperfections and can even help minimize pores! Some favorites to try: Benefit's POREfessional, Smashbox Photo Finish and MAC Prep + Prime.
  • NO SPF - Using an SPF in your daily routine is crucial to keeping your skin healthy and protected, however under the flash it tends to cause funky reflections. Avoid SPF in your makeup products and moisturizers when prepping for the camera.
  • Matte Makeup - Leave your summer “dewey” look for the beach and make sure to keep a matte finish on your look. Use a translucent powder to set and be sure to bring some along the day of for touchups!
  • More Color - Don't overdo it; but if you're normally bare-faced make sure you're adding color to your face! Keep the tones consistent with your natural coloring, but remember that deeper color adds definition. Avoid being too minimal to prevent looking washed out.
  • Avoid Glitter - Yes, a little sparkle makes everything better, just not in front of the camera. Unless you're doing a high-fashion or creative shoot, avoid the glitz as much as possible. Shimmers, glitters and highlighters can cause reflections under the lighting and flash, so let your eyes do all the sparkling on their own.
  • Set Your Look - Between multiple outfit changes, weather, wind and moving locations, it's difficult to keep your makeup in place. In addition to powder, use a setting spray to help keep all your hard work in place for the duration of your shoot. Products to try: MAKE UP FOR EVER Mist and Fix Setting Spray

Choosing the right makeup is just as important to a successful shoot as selecting your wardrobe.  Following these tips will put you on the right road to great photos.
